An online log of Atlantis' travels and adventures to Svalbard

And so, the end is near....

Posted by admin on July 26, 2013

Late this afternoon (Friday the 26th July) Atlantis came alongside her home for the next month or two at the Ardfern Yacht Centre.  Our last 24 hours were benign.  After the fantastic romp we'd enjoyed from Trondheim to Shetland and then on to Cape Wrath, the wind died away and our final night was a mix of heavy thunder showers and flat calm.  We stopped for a while in the Kyle of Lochalsh to await a fair tide; where dinner was enjoyed at anchor and Andy partook of a final swim - this time for pleasure in the warmth of a post heatwave summer evening rather than any real need. With the current once more in our favour we retraced our steps of mid May through the Sounds of Mull, Luing and Jura respectively.  We took a final chance with the eight knot tidal race of Dorus Mor and got through, just, before the tide built against us. And here we are.  Boat and crew are in good shape and ready to set off once again!

'The race ain't over...' as the saying goes and we still have to get Atlantis safely back to Plymouth; but that is for another time.  At this stage, our arrival in a beautifully tranquil little corner of Argyll brings an end to the fantastic adventure we have enjoyed over the last two and a half months.  This blog is not finished. There are more photos to share, more log data to corral and passage and pilotage notes to add.  We'll attend to that over the next few days.  There is also a lot more to do before we put the yacht to bed - but first, a shower, and we are off to the pub.
